The importance of the Gunpowder River watershed to the well-being of the Chesapeake Bay region is undeniable. The Gunpowder River is a vital western shore tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. As such, the river provides a significant home from varied wildlife, is a critical spawning habitat for native fish, and is a focal point for outdoor recreational opportunities including hiking, fishing, boating/floating, and swimming. Most importantly, it is also the essential source of drinking water for the greater Baltimore region.
The Gunpowder Riverkeeper takes responsibility for protecting and conserving the Gunpowder River watershed for the benefit of the public including diverse populations and underrepresented communities within the watershed. The Gunpowder Riverkeeper takes a proactive role in safeguarding the watershed from threats to its health and stability through scientific monitoring of the river, engaging at the source to address identified, and championing enforcement and compliance with environmental laws. The Gunpowder Riverkeeper also
- publicizes threats to the watershed and enables public advocacy and response to those threats
- communicates to the public the current state of the watershed's health and stability
- protects the watershed for current and future generations who will benefit from the river being in a protected, natural state
